Jessica Park

So we have been beyond lucky to have the amazing Jessica Park answer some Q&A for us. If you haven’t checked out her books yet well then you are in a treat because we will be featuring her this week and posting our reviews which will leave you 1 clicking her titles!!!

Jessica Park grew up in the Boston area and attended Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota. After spending four years in the frigid north, including suffering through one memorable Halloween blizzard, Jessica hightailed it back to the east coast. She now lives in (relatively balmy) New Hampshire with her husband, son, bananas dogs named Fritzy and Finn, and a selfish cat. When not writing, Jessica indulges her healthy obsessions with Facebook and complicated coffee beverages.

1.  When did you first know you wanted to start writing and what about it makes you want to continue doing it?

I sort of fell into writing about ten years ago. My mother has been a mystery writer for many years, and after I had my son and was home and sleep deprived (and unable to protest), she suckered me in to coauthoring books with her! We wrote five books together, and that process taught me so much. When the series was done, I went off on my own and wrote my first YA book, Relatively Famous, and that’s when I really, really got hooked.

I think a lot of what I love about writing has to do with my love of psychology and character exploration. Delving into different sorts of personalities and exploring how those personalities react when thrown into particular circumstances or relationships. Connecting with readers and knowing there may be people who relate to my characters– and who may even be comforted by them–is a driving force, as well.

2.  All of your characters are so unique and tend to be a little quirky, yet they are so realistic and totally relatable. How does the inspiration for a character come to you?

I really don’t know how to answer this! I remember that in my Flat-Out Love outline, Celeste was simply noted to be very bright, socially isolated and young for her age… That’s about it. I went to write her opening scene at the dinner table and BOOM! All of a sudden she had an incredibly unique voice and style. I have no idea where she came from, but I’ve learned not to stress out too much over characters’ personalities because something usually comes to me in the moment. Estelle from Left Drowning is another who I knew little about before her first scene. It’s a little scary that I don’t know how I create all these people…

3.  Your stories tend to have a plot twist/shocking moment, when you’re writing do you have that preplanned or is that something that comes to you during the process?

Now, here is something that I do plan out. I have meticulous outlines, and the planning stage is the most grueling for me. I know where I can leave out certain details, but the major story arc and plot points are all nailed down before I start page one.

4.  Fans of Left Drowning were delighted to see the surprise release of Restless Waters a few months back. I know personally we were excited for more Blythe, Chris, and especially Sabin! Do you think there’ll be any more books about these characters or perhaps the other Shepherd siblings? (Please say yes!!)

I’m not sure… I do have some ideas, and I think I’ll revisit these characters at some point, but… I don’t know. It’s very important to me that any sequels I write are strong and don’t somehow diminish whatever I’ve done before, so I’d want to have a really strong story.

5.  If you had to choose between Chris and Sabin, who would you pick and why?

Oh, I’m a Chris girl all the way! I know Sabin has the bigger fan club, lol, but I love Christopher’s solidity and strength.

6.  You stepped into the paranormal realm with your novel Clear, do you think you will do more? (Again, please say yes! Clear was one of the coolest books we’ve ever read!)

Awww, thank you! Clear and the whole concept of death tripping had been in my head for years, and I simply had to get that story out! It may end up staying a standalone, which was my intention, because I pretty much told the story I needed to. But, you never know… I really had so much fun writing that book, and I especially loved totally going against the normal “rules” for writing a paranormal. I mean, it reads mostly like a straight contemporary romance for the first third, and then you’re hit with all hell breaking loose, lol. It was a blast! Also, however, the most difficult outline I’ve ever worked on. I admire full-time para writers more than I can say… There is so much to keep track of when you’re making up a new world with new rules!

7.  Which of your characters do you think most reflects your own personality and why?

Hmm… I’m probably most like Julie from Flat-Out Love, but with a good hit of Blythe. Julie’s got a certain bouncy, curious energy, and she connects well with others, and that’s rather like me. But Blythe’s solemn side, her introspective side, is also so me. As social as I can be, I can have bouts of depression and need for isolation.

8.  Who is your all-time favorite book boyfriend?

That naughty, bossy, sexy Rhett Butler from Gone With the Wind!

9.   What 5 words would you use to describe your books to someone who’s never read them?

Romantic, psychological, funny, passionate, and emotional.

S.C. Stephens

S.C. Stephens is an amazing author who is able to create characters and a world that sucks you in and makes it so you never want to leave. We at The Book Boyfriend Addict had the opportunity to meet her last April at the North Shore Author Signing and she is every bit amazing in person as you would expect her to be.

If you have been looking for a new author to check out or a new book boyfriend to dream about you will find everything you want in the Thoughtless Series.  The D-Bags Kellan, Matt, Evan and Griffin will make you want to become part of the family and they will stay with you long after you finish the books. The most recent book in the series Untamed features Griffin and all I can say is “The Hulk will see you now”.

S.C. Stephens is a New York Times and USA Today bestselling author who enjoys spending every free moment she has creating stories that are packed with emotion and heavy on romance.

Her debut novel, Thoughtless, an angst-filled love triangle charged with insurmountable passion and the unforgettable Kellan Kyle, took the literary world by storm. Amazed and surprised by the response to the release of Thoughtless in 2009, more stories were quick to follow. Stephens has been writing nonstop ever since.

In addition to writing, Stephens enjoys spending lazy afternoons in the sun reading fabulous novels, loading up her iPod with writer’s block reducing music, heading out to the movies, and spending quality time with her friends and family. She currently resides in the beautiful Pacific Northwest with her two equally beautiful children.
