Most of my youth came with spiral notebooks filled with doodles, wedding plans, and “Janelle York” looped in bubbly handwriting.
However, one night in Vegas changed everything.
I woke up to more than just a fantasy of my brother’s best friend.
Five years later, I’m standing on his doorstep confronting him about the secret he kept from me.
If you think this is the story of how we rode off into the sunset together…
You’re so wrong.
But if you think this is the story of how Holden blackmailed me into living with him…
You couldn’t be more right.
“…had I known when I knocked on your hotel door after the wedding that what we did that night would end our friendship, I would’ve gone straight to my own room.”
Janelle Brewer has crushed on her older brother’s best friend since she was a kid and as she got older it seemed as though the affection may not have been one sided. Waking up naked in Vegas and discovering she’s spent the night with the one and only Holden York should have been Janelle’s dream come true but it turned out to be the thing that ruined their friendship. Five years later and she realizes she needs something from Holden so she returns home to confront him. Holden’s waited for the day he’d find Janelle knocking on his door and he’s not about to let this opportunity go to waste, he’s willing to give Janelle what she wants, but he’s going to need something from her in return.
I want to start by saying that I’ve read and really enjoyed some of the Leddy Harper’s other books, Eminent Love was one of my favorite reads last year. The blurb for this one caught my eye and sounded good and it started off pretty good, I was intrigued and when we found out what Holden had been hiding from Janelle for all these years I was like “here we go!” But then things got a little muddled and I had a hard time connecting with the story and with the characters. I liked Holden more often than not but I never fell for him like I wanted to. I really couldn’t connect with Janelle, I wasn’t sure if I should feel bad for her or if the things that came upon her were warranted. Some of the little games they played were fun, I did enjoy those parts. The chemistry between Holden and Janelle was also a bit off, maybe because neither one was willing to state their true intentions, I’m not sure but whatever it was, something was just missing for me. That being said, I think that a lot of people will enjoy this book, and from what I can see in the early reviews, a lot of people are. This may not be my favorite Leddy Harper book but I still look forward to what she has in store for us in the future!
About Leddy Harper
She often calls writing her therapy, using it as a way to deal with issues through the eyes of her characters.
She is now a mother of three girls, leaving her husband as the only man in a house full of females.
The decision to publish her first book was made as a way of showing her children to go after whatever it is they want to. Love what you do and do it well. Most importantly Leddy wanted to teach them what it means to overcome their fears.
