Review! A Beautiful Funeral by Jamie McGuire

“Each choice we make or every influence branches off the line we’re currently on, and at the end of that branch is another branch. It’s just a series of blank slates, even after a disaster.”

Talk about feels overload!!! As I’m writing this, it’s been almost 24hrs since I finished reading this book and I am still swimming in a sea of feels as I think back on it. Much like everyone else, I was excited yet terrified when Jamie McGuire announced this book a few months back. Excited because, yay more Maddox family! I’ve always said that any time spent with the Maddox family is time well spent, so I was pumped to see we were getting another full length novel featuring not one, but all of them! But I was terrified because of that title, I think I was in denial, thinking “she can’t possibly kill off a Maddox, the world will never forgive her” but I knew I had to trust that Jamie McGuire knew what she was doing and wouldn’t let the fans down. It was with those two emotions, excitement and fear, that I opened this book on release day and began this one last chapter for the Maddox family. This book was everything, she managed to resurrect every feeling that I had while reading the other books and then threw in a few new ones for good measure. It made me remember why I fell in love with all of these guys and I thought that it was the ultimate finale for this amazing group. Just get ready for the tears to flow, because I don’t think there’s any way they couldn’t fall after that beautiful ending!

I thought we were a tight family. Turns out we were just spiders caught in our web of lies.

The Maddox family is by far my top favorite book family and that’s exactly what they became to me over the course of all these books, family. Through all of the ups and downs their family bond and love for one another was always a pleasure to read. Then throw in all of their lady loves and you have a slew of epic romances because as we all know by now, once a Maddox falls in love, they fall forever. Well this book shows that despite how close they were, secrets have a way of tearing even the most tight knit family apart. If you’ve followed the Maddox family saga over the course of the other books then you know the secret that Thomas and Travis have been keeping for the past 11 years, this book shows us what happens when all of the lies catch up to them when their secrets put the entire family in jeopardy. It was intense, you guys! I once said that I didn’t know if Jamie McGuire would ever be able to match the level of emotion from Beautiful Disaster again but man, this one ranked right up there for me. The stakes were high and I didn’t know what to expect but there were points that were straight up scary and then when the family started to turn on one another, my heart ached for them. There came a point where I wasn’t sure who was mad a who anymore because everything was just that messed up. There were lots of twists and turns and it was getting close to the end and I thought that maybe I would come out unscathed but then it hit me and it felt like a freight train, I couldn’t stop the tears. It was such a bittersweet ending, I was as happy as I was sad. It was simply beautiful and in my opinion perfect.

I loved that we got everyone’s POVs in this book, all of the brothers and all of their wives. That’s a lot of characters to keep track of but I thought that each character’s voice came through and stuck true to their character, I never found myself confused as to which one was narrating a particular chapter. It was great being able to see what was going on in each of their lives over the past 10-11 years, seeing what’s changed and what hasn’t. It reminded me why I fell in love with these characters in the first place. Some couples were in good spots and some weren’t, so we got to see them dealing with their individual issues over the course of this book in addition to what was going on with the family.

I can’t really say anything more about the actual details of the book because I’d really hate to spoil anything. My advice to you is to trust Jamie, she knows what she’s doing and just allow yourself to feel everything this book has to offer. This book was quintessentially Maddox the whole way through, it took all the best things from this series and turned them up a notch, creating a powerful, emotional and beautiful ending for this beloved group of characters. If you are a fan of this series, you simply cannot miss this one!
