Review!! Crown of Lies (Truth and Lies Duet #1) by Pepper Winters

One man had unlocked my world. This one did his best to imprison me.

I think Pepper Winters is going to have another winner on her hands with this duet! I devoured the first book and now I really hope that this next month flies by so I can read the conclusion, especially after that ending! There are still so many lies, questions and mystery to unravel and even though we may have gotten some answers (or maybe not!) I am willing to bet that there is still so much left to uncover as some of these truths begin to come out. All I know is that I was glued to the pages right from the start and couldn’t read fast enough to see what was going to happen next.

“I’m not letting you go. I’ve only just found you.” A tenderness glowed in his brown eyes that I’d never seen from another other than family.
My knees trembled. “You don’t even know me.”
He placed a whisper-kiss on my mouth. “I don’t have to know you. I feel you.”

Noelle “Elle” Charlston, by any estimation, has led a charmed life. A loving father who dotes on her, a high profile job at the helm of her family’s company and a lifetime of financial security. The one thing she’s always lacked, however, is freedom. Which is why, on the night of her 19th birthday, she sneaks out to try to experience life as a normal teenager. Her night quickly devolves into horror as she realizes freedom isn’t exactly all it’s cracked up to be. But just as quickly, her night takes a turn for the better as a mysterious stranger comes to her rescue. All they shared was a few stolen moments under the stars before they were torn away from one another. Three years later and even though she’s been unsuccessful in tracking him down, Elle cannot stop thinking about the man from that night who made her heart sing. She’s still holding out hope that she’ll be able to find him when a new mysterious stranger comes into her life and claims her for his own. Elle can barely tolerate the likes of Penn Everett but she can’t deny her body’s reaction to this bossy and controlling man. Penn seems to have everyone else fooled, thinking that he’s the perfect man for her, but Elle sees the lies he’s pulling over everyone. Can Elle unravel Penn’s elaborate web of lies before it’s too late?

Webbed in lies and hidden in half-truths, he was not a man to trust with anything breakable – especially my heart.

Oh man, Penn Everett! Such a mystery! We got a teeny tiny bit of info towards the end as to what his story might be, but truthfully, I am not entirely convinced things are going to go down that path. Of course, time will tell, but for now there are so many questions about his man. On the surface he’s arrogant, controlling, cold and powerful. But we do catch glimpses of perhaps a different side of him which only serves to make him that much more complex. One thing’s for certain, I cannot wait to figure everything out! I know how I want things to go, but you never can tell. This man made my head spin with his mood swings, and web of lies and half-truths that he so effortlessly spun. It’s no wonder that Elle was so thrown by him, especially since her only real experience with a man prior to him was so wildly different. For all the power that she wields and how confident she is, she has led a very sheltered life in many regards. So this whole experience with Penn really turns her world upside down. I feel like she has much more to go through before all is said and done here.

“… I won’t lie to you. What you see from me will be the honest fucking truth. I’ll only hurt you if you want me to hurt you, and I’ll protect you even while I do it. Give me yourself, let me take control, and I promise you, you’ll enjoy it.”

Pepper Winters is known for her amazing dark romances, this story isn’t necessarily dark, but I think that fans of her darker stuff will still enjoy this story. It is still full of the layered storytelling and complex characters with secrets to discover that we’ve all come to know and love from a Pepper Winters book. I really can’t wait for the second half to be released so my questions can be answered, especially based on how things ended!

“You’ve been mine since the moment we met, and you’ll stay mine until I let you go. Anything else – all your arguments, denials, and refusals – mean nothing to me.”
