Review! Toxic by Nicole Blanchard

“…It isn’t what you’d call a happy story .”
“The real ones hardly ever are.”

Truer words! This was definitely not a happy story but in its own twisted way, it was a messed up unconventional love story. The blurb totally sucked me in and then once I started reading, I couldn’t stop. This book took me on a ride I was not at all expecting, there were so many twists and turns that I never saw coming but I was hooked and couldn’t wait to see what craziness would come up next. If you’re looking for a story to give you the warm and fuzzies or looking for some grand love story, you’re not going to find that here. If you’re looking for a story of survival and finding out what happens when one woman is pushed to her limits and if you’re not afraid of some pretty dark moments, then I think you’ll enjoy this one!

“You seem to think you aren’t my business .”
“Probably because I’m not. I’m not sure what makes you think you have the right to interfere, but I don’t need to be saved. I don’t need anything from you.”
“That’s where you’re wrong. I think I’m exactly what you need.”

Tessa Emerson has built up the defenses she needs in order to tolerate the horrific circumstances she’s forced to live with. The only reprieve is the time she spends as a nurse at the local prison. She knows the rules and doesn’t dare break them until the day a mysterious and sexy new prisoner shows up in her infirmary. There’s something about him that draws her and makes her want to forget all the reasons why getting mixed up with him would be a bad idea. When he demands her help in breaking him out of there, she has no idea what the true implications of her actions will be. She may have been able to escape one house of horror, but by helping this mysterious man, is she just trading one prison for another? Or will she discover things about herself that she could never have imagined?

He’s a craving I can’t quite shake. A disease slowly spreading through me. My head tells me I should walk away, but my greedy heart begs for more of his illicit attention.

As I mentioned, if you’re looking for a knight in shining armor or a hero to swoon over, you’re going to be disappointed. Our mysterious hero is the very definition of anti-hero. In fact, for much of the book, I wasn’t even sure how I should feel about him. Certain things he did at the start were almost sweet and I felt myself softening toward him, but then things happen and you are left wondering how you are supposed to feel again. I loved this back and forth and unraveling the twisted story the further I got. I thought Tessa was a very strong heroine, she endured some pretty awful things, things that would easily break a lesser person but instead of submitting, she used that to build her resolve to no longer be a victim. Even though the things she did were a little messed up, I was cheering her on the entire way because she didn’t dole out anything that wasn’t deserved. By the end, she was pretty bad ass! I don’t read tons of dark romances but I do enjoy when they are done right and well written and I thought this one certainly was! It had plenty of suspense, action, heat and a twisted love story that I easily devoured!

“You shouldn’t want me. I am not a nice man. I am not a good man. I do bad things for bad people.” He licks the bite, and his mouth skims up my throat. “I want to do bad things to you.”
